Self-Reliance

Self-Reliance and Eleanor Roosevelt Nothing can bring you peace only when yourself. Eleanor Roosevelt epitomizes this philosophy of self-reliance. However, Eleanor was not always the confident and self-reliant someone that she is pictured to be. When she first married Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and for several years thereafter, she date-tested to b e the wife and mother that everyone expected (Fleming 24). She always did what Franklin and her mother-in-law told her and neer tried to be an individual (Fleming 24). That all changed when she discovered her husbands infidelity. Franklin had exactly returned ill from over seas when Eleanor found letters to Franklin from Lucy Mercer (his mistress, her secretary) (Fleming 34). She offered him a divorce but at the time it was considered wrong and could have destroyed his political career (Fleming 34). He promised that he would never see Lucy again.
